Sujata Massey's Asiafile Newsletter

butterflyHi Friends,

Just like these monarch butterflies emerging from their chrysalides outside my house, some books are getting ready to launch. First in line is THE WIDOWS OF MALABAR HILL in paperback around Thanksgiving weekend (Nov. 20, 2018). You can pre-order now at Amazon, Apple, B&N, IndieBound and Kobo and get it delivered to your house or e-reading device that day.

The Satapur MoonstoneSo you read it already? Pre-orders for THE SATAPUR MOONSTONE (May 14, 2019) are available, too, from Amazon, Apple, B&N, IndieBound and Kobo. I’ll mail colorful signed bookplates specific to each of these books (or with my photo) to anyone pre-ordering in North America. Simply email me with “bookplate” in the subject line and specify whether you want the SATAPUR MOONSTONE, WIDOWS OF MALABAR HILL, or Sujata Massey author photo bookplate with your full name and STREET ADDRESS in the US or Canada. Word to the wise: If you want to get a few of the remaining limited-edition hardcovers for holiday giving—do it fast before they’re sold out.

Like my monarch butterflies, I have flitted to warm places this fall. I met some very well-read book lovers in Phoenix, AZ, at a book festival sponsored by The Poisoned Pen Bookshop, and at the Bouchercon Mystery Convention in St. Petersburg, FL.

Because we’re almost to the cozy fireplace reading season, I’m tipping you off to early 20th century international historical mysteries that I love:

  • A RISING MAN and A NECESSARY EVIL by Abir Mukherjee, set in 1920s Calcutta
  • THE FRANGIPANI TREE MYSTERY by Ovidia Yu, set in 1920s Singapore
  • MR. CHURCHILL’S SECRETARY and many more by Susan Elia MacNeal, set in 1940s Britain
  • INTRODUCING THE HONORABLE PHRYNE FISHER by Kerry Greenwood, set in 1920s Australia
  • A VERY PUKKA MURDER by Arjun Raj Gaind, set in 1920s India

Up and down the East Coast!

Here is where I will be in the next few months. All these events are free, and no reservations are necessary.

History Book Festival, Lewes, Delaware, Sat. Sept. 29, at 3 PM in Lewes Public Library Room B, Lewes, DE.

Morristown Festival of Books, Sat. Oct 13, at 11:10 AM in St. Peter’s Church, 121 South Street, Morristown, NJ. A literary conversation with fellow mystery author William Kent Krueger.

Women’s National Book Association Authors Panel, Thurs., Oct 25, from 7-9 PM at Towne Book Center, 220 Plaza Drive, Collegeville, PA.

Sujata and AishwaryaSisters in Crime Mystery Author Holiday Book Showcase, Sat. Nov. 3, 1 PM, Miller Branch of Howard County Library, 9421 Frederick Road, Ellicott City, MD.

Lastly, I want to clear up some questions over this picture I posted in the last newsletter! This is Aishwarya Jha-Mathur, who dressed like Perveen and gave a dramatic reading in New Delhi. There is no TV series or feature film yet; however, I may have news about that coming! Therefore, my question for you is: WHO SHOULD PLAY Perveen, Cyrus, Alice, and others? Post your thoughts and pictures on my Facebook author page and we can all talk about it!

Have a delightful fall.

Sujata
